The conversion of this old townhouse to a workspace, in the Central Croydon Conservation Area, was completed in 2019 for Brick By Brick and Common Ground Architecture (now Grounded). The new workspace, situated above the ground floor retail space, re-purposed the previously over divided small offices into a contemporary, light-filled co-working space, bringing energy to the local high street.

The space uses ‘homely’ features to create an office space with ‘wellness’ in mind. Blandly open spaces are avoided; instead, characterful places to work are created, enhancing the Brick By Brick ethos of flexible working. Fixed desks and corporate meeting rooms are avoided in favour of flexible work stations and private breakout spaces.

The first floor is separated into two spaces by large sliding doors, which can be opened to create one big gathering place and a function room. The stair is the primary design feature, connecting the multiple spaces. The decoration of the stair extends the vertical motif of the shop front at ground floor, but varies in character depending on the position within the building. The roof space was opened to reveal the rafters and create a light and intimate space on the top floor.
