62 George Street is situated within the Central Croydon Conservation Area. In 2019 the old townhouse became the offices and sales suite for Brick By Brick and Common Ground Architecture (now Grounded). Common Ground Architecture delivered the project.

The challenge was to create a contemporary shop front that stood out in the street whilst working respectfully within the historic fabric. George Street was once populated with ornate timber shop fronts, such as the opticians which used their products as motifs for decoration on the façade.

The new shop front references the residential window proportions of the Victorian terrace, while simultaneously creating a homely feel within the shop. The façade detail is created with timber battens, arranged vertically, to provide a subtle decoration that appears and disappears as you move past it.
