The Croydon Small Sites Programme was set up to accelerate housing delivery in the borough but also raise the quality of design being delivered. Red Clover Gardens at Lion Green Road was the largest scheme completed as part of this programme. Grounded acted as client advisor and interior designer for the project.
The Grounded team advised on the selection of architects, design brief and led the comprehensive review of the scheme through project gateways. Working with Development & Asset Managers, the team set out clear protocols for reviewing quality on site and undertook regular visits with the Contractor CField Construction.
Red Clover Gardens, located on a previous car park, designed by Mary Duggan Architects & delivered by RUFF Architects, it consists of five sculpted pavilions set within verdant landscape providing 157 new homes (78 affordable). Grounded acted as design guardian throughout and worked with Mary Duggan to ensure design intent was maintained throughout construction and handover.
The judges … praised the expressiveness of the architecture,… seeing it as emblematic of the ambition to creatively challenge and rethink what might have ended up as just another vernacular housing block.
